Description

Hotel Maria La Gorda, 3*

Hotel Maria La Gorda located on the Guanahacabibes Peninsula, which has been declared by UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1987. It is situated at about 300 KM west of Havana.

The Hotel is a well-known diving sanctuary that has 33 diving sites along with enviable pure, ample coral formations, underwater gardens as well as a rich maritime ecosystem. Water temperatures typical around 24 degrees Celsius. Although perfect for Scuba Diving, additionally appeals to its visitors looking to do parasailing, like deep-sea fishing.

The Hotel has 100 cabins, which merge with its surroundings due to its timber construction. Refurbished in 2014 this lodge has a new buffet bistro, a new cyber café, vestibule pub and table games.

The Hotel or ‘Fat Maria’ in English takes its name from a colonial story about a Venezuelan female who – by the tale – was abducted by pirates and left in this western Cuban region.

4.4 "Would have liked another day"

This location is off the beaten track, since it is at the far western tip of Cuba - we went with a group otherwise may not have made it there - it has a dive/snorkeling center which accounts for most of the stays at this hotel - we found the units to be very good (for Cuba), the beach with the clear waters and reasonable snorkeling right from the shore was very good - the breakfast buffet was OK, but we avoided the buffet dinner and ate at the little restaurant on the shore instead - the snorkelling off the dive boats was ok - lots to see but with a depth of 4 meters plus, it was not up close and personal like we experienced at Playa Coral for example. We would have enjoyed staying another day, since we found it very relaxing. From Bryan B North Vancouver, Canada. Stayed December 2015, travelled as a couple.

3.4 "Good spot for non-diver"

Our group of sixteen birdwatchers stayed here in order to be close to prime birding locations. I am not a diver or a beach-goer, except to look for wildlife. I understand from our guide that the hotel has expanded considerably over past several years. When we weren't out birding elsewhere, we wandered the hotel grounds and saw some good birds. This was one of the first places I stayed in Cuba, and the quality was better than I expected after hearing the comments from other U.S. travelers. My room, in one of the newer buildings, was clean, and everything was operable. Each morning we were there, I saw the staff working diligently. All the meals area buffet style, and I found plenty that I could eat. From Judith D Berkeley, California. Stayed November 2015, travelled with friends.
