The tour starts at 9:00 in the morning. If you are staying in the city of Trinidad, the guide will pick you up at your hotel or private home, if not you must meet the guide in “La Plaza Mayor” where the tour starts.
This city was founded by Diego Velazquez in 1514 and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988. The original cobblestone streets and pastel-colored houses give the impression that time has scarcely moved on since the Colonial times. From the 1600s – 1800s, the city was a major centre for trading sugar and slaves, and the buildings around the Plaza Mayor, the heart of Trinidad, bear witness to the wealth of the landowners of the time. An extended period of isolation from the 1850s to the 1950s protected the city from any original new building, and the original town layout has been left virtually unchanged. The historic centre has recently been skilfully restored, down to details like the streets used to be.
Walking around the streets leading from Plaza Mayor is a fascinating experience even if you have no any particular destination. A slow stroll allows time to observe the detail of a window, a small balcony, the uneven cobblestones, or the cannons used as bollards. The historical centre is more or less free of traffic. In the evening, the houses glow in the warm hues of sunset, and music fills the streets: “La Casa de la Musica“ and “La Casa de la Trova“ offer daily concerts by local bands.
