You will first enjoy a visit to Finca La Vigía, the Hemingway’s house in Cuba located at San Francisco de Paula, on the outskirts of Havana, it is the only residence Ernest Hemingway ever had outside the US. He lived here, in the periods between his various foreign trips, for almost 20 years. The villa, built-in 1887 by Catalan architect Miguel Pascual y Baguer, was bought by Hemingway at the end of 1940 and later in 1962 was made a museum. Everything in the villa is in the same meticulous order as when Hemingway lived here. There is a library with more than 9,000 books; various hunting trophies from African safaris hanging in the living room; the author’s possessions, such as his weapons and typewriter, and valuable artworks, including a ceramic plate by Picasso.
Two curious features in the garden are the pet cemetery (Hemingway had about 50 cats during his lifetime), and “Pilar”, the author’s fishing boat, which was transferred from Cojimar to the museum and placed in a specially built pavilion in the former tennis court. The “Pilar” was a comfortable and fast boat made of American black oak.
The tour will continue with a visit to the Fisherman’s town of Cojimar, the place which inspired Hemingway to write his most famous novel “The Old Man and The Sea”.
Next stop will be in the historical centre of the city declared World Heritage Site, where you will have an hour walking tour along the Old Havana quarters including the most important places visit by Hemingway, such as his room on the fifth floor of the Ambos Mundos hotel (where Hemingway lived his first years in Cuba from 1939 before he found a quiet villa outside the town) and the two bars: “La Bodeguita del Medio” and “El Floridita”.
At the Floridita’s bar, the writer helped to improve the Daiquiri cocktail; you will have the opportunity to enjoy this famous cocktail at Hemingway’s style. The tour ends with the return to your hotel or a near restaurant to get lunch by yourself.
